Ascension of 'Abdu'l-Baha + other language versions of LJ

Tonight we experienced a very special observance of the Ascension of 'Abdu'l-Bahá in our home. Earlier in the evening, we watched "Luminous Journey" for the first time in a really long time, with various friends arriving at points during it before our midnight program. It brought about so many memories of the Master and of making the film and receiving such confirmation!

There is an indefinable connection among souls as we celebrate the life and mourn the passing of 'Abdu'l-Baha. After the prayers, writings, and music, nine of us sat together, telling stories. Wow.

It made me want to return to this blog--which I am grateful is still there, as I should collect all the many stories that have gone into it. Unfortunately, our website for the film (LuminousJourney.org) was dismantled—we think maliciously—sometime after the Persian version was released.  Our web host says they will try to resurrect it--for $150--but not sure when we can do that. . . . How sad!

Anyway, there are now various language versions of Luminous Journey! I hope it is not a risk to list them here:

NSA Letter re. Airing--this Saturday!

April 27, 2016

Dearest Bahá’í Friends,

The National Spiritual Assembly has just received word that the Voice of America (VOA) Persian Service will―this coming Saturday, April 30, at 11:30 a.m. EDST (8:00 p.m. in Tehran)―be airing in Persian an abbreviated version of the documentary film Luminous Journey: ‘Abdu’l-Bahá in America, 1912, transmitted via Ekran.

This original film, created by Anne and Tim Perry of Perry Productions, brings to light a facet of American history little known to the average citizen: ‘Abdu’l-Bahá’s 239-day sojourn in the United States and Canada in 1912, the transforming effects of which are still being felt more than a century later.

The abbreviated version of the film being broadcast to Iran by VOA was prepared by an Iranian filmmaker, Mr. Karim Bakhtiary, eager to introduce ‘Abdu’l-Bahá to an Iranian audience that has never been given an opportunity to know Him nor to recognize Him as a significant Iranian Whose ideas, character, writings, and talks have profoundly influenced both notables and ordinary people alike.

Please make the broadcast information above available to the Iranian friends in your community at your earliest opportunity, asking them to share it with their families and acquaintances so that this inspiring story will be seen as widely as possible in Iran and in Iranian circles abroad.

With loving Bahá’í greetings,

Kenneth E. Bowers
Secretary
National Spiritual Assembly of the
  Bahá'ís of the United States

Opportunities at end of 2015

The Persian version of Luminous Journey was shown in two parts at the recent Grand Canyon conference in Phoenix--and I went to attend the conference. Our photo image was the only image appearing in the conference program.
We did two screenings at the dinner hour, 5-6 pm, and surprisingly, a number of people attended. I also helped with Jon Rezin's 9 Star Media booth; we sold a number of DVDs. Best of all, I got re-inspired to work on the European story--particularly as two women we met from Germany said they would help us!  Lisa Bradley, in photos below, helped me on the second day of the screening.
Today, Tim & I presented stories and footage of the making of Luminous Journey to the youth at the Plano Baha'i School. That was a blessing, with confirmations.  Wish we would have more opportunities to present. . . .

Our second screening of the Persian-language version of Luminous Journey occurred this afternoon at the Friends of Persian Culture conference in the Chicago area. Probably 200 people or so came in to see the film; we were able to show 1:15 min. of it, and then announce its DVD availability in the bookstore.

One woman from Dubai bought 2 copies, and a number of people from Australia did as well. Somehow, it is very touching to me that the film will go out to these places.  Here I am, introducing the film.

And here is Jon Rezin and I at his 9 Star Media Booth. . . . He has multiple arms in the panoramic shot!

Persian Version of Luminous Journey in Production!

Finally, after more than two full years of work, our Persian version of Luminous Journey is being replicated.  It has been a hard and incredible project, involving lots of help and support.  Now 2 hours (instead of 2.5 hours), it is a work that reflects the Persian spoken in Iran today, with narrative voices all re-recorded. . . .

Evaluation of Luminous Journey, by a film student

One of my students at the Art Institute borrowed a copy of the film.  She filled out a film sheet in response; I will put her answers below!

Sound: the soundtrack is excellent, with perfect variations to lead the narration and different transitions very well done.

Lighting: there are some brighter scenes outdoors that are difficult to control but almost perfect with indoor scenes.

Editing: the editing is done well between photographs and live images and special effects.

Time sequence: the sequence is set perfectly by 'Abdu'l-Baha himself.

Cinematography: good. Very rich colors especially with the scenic sequences.

Costumes: excellent perfect period costumes and props.

Other: It is clear the amount of work and time that was contributed.

It relates to my religious beliefs. Although raised as a Christian, I have always believed the way he influenced people to be, that all religions should be at peace with each other.

The film was very effective. I cannot believe that his history is not more prominent to be learned in the United States. I learned a great deal. I even watched some with my boyfriend, who was raised Catholic, and he was very interested and impressed by the way he was.

I think this is an extremely important history that needs to be shared throughout the world, especially here in the U.S.  He seemed to be a true prophet by the way he influenced so many people so positively. I would love to share this with family and friends because it applies to all of us--not one religion or race but humanity. I think this should be seen in churches of all types and in classes on religion.

(How's that for focus testing? I gave her the copy of the film to keep, so she can keep sharing it!)

Eternal Nature of 'Abdu'l-Bahá's Journey

Engaged in a Wilmette Institute course right now on 'Abdu'l-Bahá, I am inspired by many mysteries associated with His travels--and life, for that matter!

Here's an ever-significant quotation, for reflection (again)! The human race seems to yearn for distance to be annihilated and yet does not know how to go about it. Perhaps it's just really a matter of our working on our individual and collective "illumination"--and knowing about such potent figures as 'Abdu'l-Baha to help us!

"Whenever an illumined assembly of the friends of God is gathered, 'Abdu'l-Bahá, although bodily absent, is yet present in spirit and in soul. I am always a traveler to America and am assuredly associating with spiritual and illumined friends. Distance is annihilated and prevents not the close and intimate association of two souls that are closely attached in heart even though they may be in two different countries. I am therefore thy close companion, attuned and in harmony with thy soul."    SWAB 145

'Abdu'l-Bahá in Bristol, UK--Clifton Guest House apartment purchased

Exciting news!  See message below.  We can't wait to go see the Clifton Guest House apartment in Bristol.
'Abdu'l-Bahá on balcony,
Clifton Guest House
_______

National Spiritual Assembly
5 November 2014
To the Bahá’ís of the United Kingdom
Dearly loved Friends,
On two occasions ‘Abdu’l-Bahá visited the City of Bristol: once for three days in September 1911 and again for one day in January 1913.  On both occasions he stayed at the Clifton Guest House on Royal York Terrace where he was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Tudor-Pole.  Built on elevated ground, the guest house overlooks a valley in which the early city of Bristol was built.  Although visiting on the first occasion to gain some rest from His arduous travels and extensive engagements in London, whilst in the guest house ‘Abdu’l-Bahá took the time to address large gatherings, meet individuals and groups of friends, shower His tender love upon children, dine with close companions, cheer and advise the staff, give interviews to newspaper reporters and devote time to His extensive daily correspondence.  In an account written by Mr. Tudor-Pole we read that the “Master went all over Guest House blessing and dedicating each room to the service of Bahá’u’lláh and promising that the house would become a centre of peace and rest for pilgrims from East and West.”  The property is now entirely residential and has been divided into a number of apartments.
How extraordinary it is to consider that the Master—He whom Shoghi Effendi reminds us as being “the Centre and Pivot of Bahá’u’lláh’s peerless and all-enfolding Covenant, His most exalted handiwork, the stainless Mirror of His light, the perfect Exemplar of His teachings, the unerring Interpreter of His Word, the embodiment of every Bahá’í ideal, the incarnation of every Bahá’í virtue, the Most Mighty Branch sprung from the Ancient Root, the Limb of the Law of God, the Being “round Whom all names revolve,” the Mainspring of the Oneness of Humanity, the Ensign of the Most Great Peace, the Moon of the Central Orb of this most holy Dispensation” – twice visited and stayed in this blessed and sacred place.  It is thus with untold joy and excitement that the National Spiritual Assembly is pleased to inform you that on behalf of the Bahá’í community it has purchased one of the apartments within the former Clifton Guest House.
It is the intention of the National Assembly to work towards opening the property for visitors.  On hearing the news of the final purchase, the Universal House of Justice, in a letter dated 31 October 2014, conveyed that it was pleased to learn of the purchase of the property and that the National Assembly’s “intention to carry out renovation work, so that the former guest house can be brought closer in appearance to its condition at the time when ‘Abdu’l-Bahá visited it, is entirely appropriate”.  This will require historical records to be researched and, in light of the information gleaned, the property will be restored to its former condition to the extent possible.
Enclosed with this email letter is a photograph of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá standing on a balcony on the first floor of Clifton Guest House. It is the apartment associated with this balcony that has been purchased.
Given that this apartment is one of many in the building, sensitivity is required in regard to both viewing premises now and visiting it in the future when it is open for this purpose, and we are sure that you will bear this in mind.
We know that you will join us in giving thanks to Bahá’u’lláh for this stupendous and sacred gift which He has chosen to confer upon this already blessed community at this moment in its history. Ours is now the duty to prepare this precious place for future generations of visitors from east and west who will flow to it and draw upon its hallowed spirit of tranquillity and peace to inspire them in their building of His world embracing civilisation.
With loving Bahá’í greetings,
National Spiritual Assembly

'Abdu'l-Bahá in Hungary

As our Persian version of Luminous Journey slowly progresses (after a major change of direction prompted by the Universal House of Justice), we are still interested in pursuing the research and writing of a series of films about 'Abdu'l-Bahá in Europe. While UK has expressed the most interest, France seems to be the starting place for us.

Recently a friend shared the following link, which I am excited about studying:

Hope this will benefit someone who wishes to "go" to Budapest in the footsteps of the Master!
